SANDY RIVER: spring Chinook, summer steelhead
Fishing on the Sandy for steelhead was picking back up with the recent warm weather and subsequent low-level snowmelt. Now the river is running clear and at a moderate level, good conditions for fishing.
Fishing pressure has leveled off a bit in the past week as anglers are most likely not encountering as many winter steelhead and are awaiting the next push of fresh summer steelhead and more spring chinook. Conditions will continue to improve each week, as more summer steelhead show up. Spring chinook are lurking around the Sandy as well, with a couple of confirmed catches over the past week from Cedar Creek to Oxbow Park.
Those anglers who are finding success are using predominantly bobber and jig, colored beads or spinners. Anglers can also find bank access to the Sandy River in several areas from Troutdale up to Brightwood. Lewis and Clark Park, Dabney Park, and Dodge Park all offer good spots for bank fishing.
USGS hydrological data for May 14 shows Sandy flows at 1,000 cfs, with a gauge reading of 8.69 feet and the water temperature on the Little Sandy at Bull Run holding at 49° F.
