2017 Quilcene river fishing report:

When I showed up this morning at the Big Quil it was dumping. The rain was coming down pretty good for a while making in hard to fish. The water visibility was murky as well due to the increased water levels. Lot’s of fish were coming up the river and unfortunately they were mostly chum. The Chum are about 5 to 1 verses Coho and doesn’t look like that will change anytime soon.

It was a battle all morning trying to get to the coho through the pile of chum. The chum were so thick, I was hooking them without even trying. They would swim bye my set up jaw jacking and my line would catch in it’s mouth dragging my hook and setting it. The only thing I could do after that was cut off or land it and pull my gear out.

We’ll I’m kind of cheap and I’m not about to give up my gear to chum so I fight them and get my gear back. I learned a great lesson today about that. When I hooked one of those monster Chum, I reached down with my hand to take the hook out of it’s mouth. Big mistake! That nasty things set of gnarled teeth ripped a chunk out of my finger when I was trying to pull that hook out. I didn’t realize how sharp those big ugly teeth were. Well guess what? I do now! Take it from me, if you’re going to pull a hook from a chum, use pliers.

The Gash!

So here I was, with a big gash in my finger and only two fish on the stringer. The thing was bleeding like a stuck pig too. I checked every pocket in my pack and had no band aids, so I did what any good fisherman would have done. I created a mic shift tourniquet from fishing yarn. Surprisingly it did fairly well at stopping the bleeding.

After I tied it off, it was back to fishing and by 1:00 PM, I finally limited out. Overall it was a great day on the water, but I earned it, that’s for sure. Damn chum!

Today’s hard earned limit.
